Dr. John Foster of the Museum of Moab will be our expert guide on this excursion. We will visit some of the most spectacular of Moab’s many dinosaur footprint sites of the Jurassic and Cretaceous periods, seeing tracks left by carnivorous and herbivorous giants on ancient lakeshores, river sandbars and in inter-dune oases! The trip’s guide, Dr. John Foster, is the Director of the Museum of Moab and is a vertebrate paleontologist specializing in the paleoecology of Late Jurassic terrestrial ecosystems. He has worked in Mesozoic rocks of the Colorado Plateau region, and most frequently in the Moab area, for more than 20 years. He is author of the books Jurassic West: The Dinosaurs of the Morrison Formation and Their World (Indiana University Press, 2007) and Cambrian Ocean World: Ancient Sea Life of North America (IUP, 2014).
“Foot prints are the neatest thing,” Foster says. “They preserve the activity of the animal when it was alive and shows the area they frequented, as opposed to bones which can end of up scattered in any environment. Tracks will never deceive you – they always show up where the animal was living.”
